10 Things Every Hiker Should Carry
10 Things Every Hiker Should Carry
Hiking is a great way
to see the world and relax at the same time. Whether you are hiking up a
mountain trail or through a forest, being close to nature and away from the
city is good for the soul. However, heading out unequipped is a recipe for
disaster so here are 10 things every hiker should take with them, whether just
going on a day trip or longer.
A Backpack
The most important
thing a hiker will need is a backpack. Where are you going to put everything
else? You need a durable pack that can withstand the rough and tumble of a hike.
It also needs to be big enough to carry everything else on this list. Most
importantly, your backpack needs to be comfortable. You will be carrying it
with you for most of the day, so if it sits funny or digs in uncomfortably,
your hike is not going to be enjoyable. Head to a sporting store and try out a
few until you find one that meets those three requirements. Some backpacks come
with additional built-in extras (water carrier, phone charge, etc.), so you can
tick off some of this list with just one purchase.
The Right Shoes
The right footwear is
as important, if not more, than the right backpack. The right shoes will depend
on the type of hike you are planning to go on along with the season. If it’s a warm
summer day and the trail is fairly flat, you can get away with a good pair of
comfortable trainers. If you are hitting a mountain trail with lots of loose
gravel or bad weather is forecast, then a pair of waterproof hiking boots will
serve you better. Wet feet are both uncomfortable and bad for your health.
Sun Protection
Sunglasses, sunscreen,
a brimmed hat, and lip balm. All of these things should be with you, even if
there is no sign of the sun. Staying out all day in the wind or hot sun can
leave you with burn and chapped lips. Even the sun reflecting off the
snow can damage your eyes.
The Right Clothing
When out in the wild,
the weather can change without giving notice. You need to ensure you are
dressed for the current forecast, but also prepared if the weather does take a
turn. I recommend always carrying an extra layer of warm clothing and something
waterproof, even if there is not a cloud in the sky. Avoid cotton clothing as
they will absorb moisture, and leave you freezing cold.
A Flashlight
One rule to take with
you, not just when hiking, but life in general, is to keep some form of
illumination easy to access. You may not plan to stay out after dark but getting
caught in the middle of nowhere with no way to see, is not a situation you want
to be in. Most mobile phones come with a built-in flashlight, but it’s better
to have a backup. Make sure you test your light before heading out.
First-Aid Kit
Being prepared means
expecting the worst, and hoping for the best. For this reason, hopefully, you
will never have to open your first-aid kit, but if you get an injury and don’t
have it, you will be in an even worse position. Many prepackaged first-aid kits
cover the essentials, and you can add any medication that you might need. It is
worth taking the time to learn some basic
first-aid skills before heading out.A first-aid kit is worthless if you don't know how to use it.
Water
Hydrate, hydrate, and
hydrate some more. When doing any form of physical activity, it is vital that
you stay hydrated. Make sure you have enough water for your trip and ensure
that your water is easily accessible. 4 Liters per person, per day, is a good
amount to start with. Water is heavy, hence the need for a good backpack.
Alternatively, water purification tablets are an alternative but you must
ensure there is a source of water on your trail.
Food
As well as staying
hydrated, you will need enough energy to get you through your day. Pack some
sandwiches for lunch, and keep enough snacks to hand to keep hunger at bay.
Some ideas for food to take with you to snack on include:
·
Dried
fruit and nuts
·
Dried meat
·
Granola
bars
As long as you are consuming enough calories,
you will be OK.
Toiletries
Hand sanitizer, toilet
paper, and if applicable, ladies toiletries, should all be in your pack. If you
got to go, you got to go, so being equipped to deal with your business is essential. However, make sure you dispose of your trash properly. You are a
guest in nature so should be leaving the trail in the same, if not better
condition, than when you arrived.
Navigation
Finally, you need the
tools to know where you are going. A map of the area and a compass will help
you navigate the hiking trail. However, you should also equip yourself with the
skills to actually use a map
and compass. Your mobile may not get a signal so you can’t rely on
technology too much.
Hiking Is a Great Way to See the World
Hiking is a great way
to see the world and hopefully, this list will give you an idea of the
essentials you should be carrying. As you gain more experience you will be able to work out what else
you need to take with you to make your trip more enjoyable. Though not
essential for a day trip, I always keep a blanket in my pack, in case I want to
sit down and take in the peace and quiet for a moment.
What do you always
keep in your hiking pack? Are you worried about not being equipped for a
situation on the trail?
